When Jack left, things started to go bad. We Cubs were wearing uniforms and Jeffrey wasn't. It was like he wasn't one of us anymore.

Paul started to get cranky, Talbot went off by himself, which is what he does when he's feeling out of sorts. Wolfred began to whistle. I'm sure he does that just to annoy me. And then Janos and Zoltan started fighting. They're brothers and they do that all the time--for fun, I think.

Maybe it was because we were on our own too long, without any adults to look after us. Or maybe it was because we were locked up or getting hungry or maybe it was just because it was getting dark and we couldn't sit down without freezing our butts off.
